When the company of Fred and Barbra Streisand wasn’t enough, David Emami liked to take long walks, usually not knowing where he’d eventually end up. He walked around rain or shine, and since it was Portland, it was usually rainy. After a long day at work, David wanted to get out, so he went on his way and didn’t know exactly when he’d come back.
His neighborhood was a haven for the homeless, in fact, much of Portland was. He didn’t mind the homeless, and often gave them food when he made too much. As he walked down the street, a homeless man approached him and, with the saddest face, asked him for some help.
“I hope this helps,” he said as he put the money in the man’s hand.
“Oh, man, thank you so much. This won’t be wasted. God bless you!” The man disappeared and David continued his stroll.
David walked by an antique shop and of course, he had to stop inside. He looked with awe at all the items, and eventually settled on a Howdy Doody button that he intended to wear to work the next day.
After his little detour, he felt hungry and decided to head home. On his way there, he saw a man that looked a lot like the homeless man that had asked for money only an hour earlier. However, this man didn’t look homeless at all and was actually unlocking the door on his sparkling, beautiful Cadillac. David had been duped.
The man shrugged his shoulders. “Gotta pay for this car somehow!” He slipped into the car, revved the engine, and drove off, splashing David with a puddle as he left the parking lot.
David finished his walk angrily. He swore to never help another person as long as he lived.
David Emami is Alone in Portland is a collection of stories that peer into the life of a middle-aged curmudgeon with a fondness for cats and antiques.
Playfully illustrated with Bitmoji characters, his story comes to life as each day brings a new adventure.
He was obsessive compulsive and mad about antiques. The apartment was covered, top to bottom, in decor that would be more aligned with that of an old woman that peaked in the 1960s. david-emami-takes-on-portland.html
